Elysium – A Sci-fi Film not so Fictional Afterall
By Gunner Glam
Coming this weekend from the director of District 9 (2009) comes Elysium, an action-packed thriller starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster.
Elysium is an American science fiction action film written, co-produced and directed by Neill Blomkamp. It was released on August 9, 2013 in both conventional and IMAX Digital theaters. Elysium is a co-production of Media Rights Capital and TriStar Pictures.
In the year 2154, the very wealthy live on Elysium, a Stanford torus high-tech space station governed by President Patel (Faran Tahir), in a utopian setting which includes access to private medical machines that offer instant cures, while everyone else lives below on the overpopulated, disease ridden, ruined, “Third World slum” Earth has become. Those who maintain Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens’ lifestyle, even destroying ships that attempt to get there. After an industrial accident exposes him to a fatal dose of radiation, 36-year-old factory-worker and ex-con Max DeCosta (Matt Damon) has only five days to get from Los Angeles to Elysium in order to be cured. Max straps into a powerful exoskeleton and attempts to kidnap a rich businessman (William Fichtner) in order to steal his identity and hijack his way into Elysium. This pits him against Elysium’s Secretary of Defense Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her violent secret police forces, led by Agent Kruger (Sharlto Copley).
The film takes place on both a ravaged Earth and the luxurious space habitat called Elysium. It will explore political and sociological themes such as immigration, health care and class issues. When asked whether the film reveals how he sees Earth turning out in 140 years, director Blomkamp responded “No, no, no. This isn’t science fiction. This is today. This is now.”
Elysium re-unites Blomkamp with some of his District 9 crew, such as editor Julian Clarke, production designer Philip Ivey, cinematographer Trent Opaloch, and actor Sharlto Copley playing one of the film’s villains.
In January 2011, independent studio Media Rights Capital met with major studios to present Elysium, and Blomkamp shared art designs of his proposed science fiction film. The art designs won over the executives at Sony Pictures, who bought the film after making a more attractive offer than the other studios.
With a budget of $90 million, production began in July 2011. The film’s Earth-bound scenes were shot in a dump in the poor Iztapalapa district on the outskirts of Mexico City, while the scenes for the space city Elysium were shot in Vancouver and the wealthy Huixquilucan-Interlomas suburbs of Mexico City. Matt Damon shaved his head for the role of Max, and also worked out four hours a day with personal trainer Dr. Sae-ung.
The main role was offered to rapper Eminem, but he wanted the film to be shot in Detroit. That was not an option for the two studios, so Blomkamp moved on to Damon as his next choice.
The futuristic designs were executed by Philip Ivey after long periods of researching and studying older science fiction films. Ivey has continuously cited Syd Mead as a substantial influence for the film. Complicated visual effects were handled by Industrial Light and Magic and Image Engine, the latter of which collaborated on District 9. Re-shoots took place through October 2012.
The film’s “organic” music score was composed by newcomer Ryan Amon and recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Go check it out!

Lash Out This Summer Season
By Gunner Glam
At Studio Brow, our lash services, coined Illumilash Lash Extensions, can are performed in one place; the Lash Lounge.
We thought we would share some tidbits on ways you can keep your lashes looking amazing =)
One of the pretty features of the eyes are the eyelashes. Taking care of eyelashes and maintaining them should be a routine.
– Condition your eyelash by the time you sleep. Eyelashes tend to break easily when they get dry. Make it a point to remove your eye makeup before you get to bed. Remove your mascara from an eyelashes. Put some petroleum jelly on a little cotton swab and stroke it on your eyelashes gently. Another easy way is to hold the cotton swab and allow some butterfly kisses by fluttering your lashes for some seconds. For pretty, long lashes, applying castor oil before you sleep is advised.
– To get a pretty, curled look, use an eyelash curler before applying a mascara. They always give you a natural look and when applied in the right manner, they allow no clumping of lashes.
– Make sure you coat both the top and bottom of your eyelashes. Start by coating the eyelashes slightly with a powder, as this will help hold the mascara that you will apply. make sure you don’t hold the mascara brush for long, instead, wiggle the brush to apply mascara. Apply on both top and cotton coats.
Thanks for reading. Stay Fresh!

Iron Man 3
By Gunner Glam
Opening today comes the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe; Iron Man 3, starring Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsly.
With the release of Marvel’s The Avengers in May 2012, the fictional universe has expanded to make room in sequels for Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Iron Man 3 is the sequel to Iron Man and Iron Man 2, and the seventh installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, being the first major release in the franchise since the crossover film The Avengers. Shane Black directed a screenplay he co-wrote with Drew Pearce, which is loosely based on the “Extremis” story arc by Warren Ellis. Jon Favreau, who directed the first two films, serves as executive producer, along with Kevin Feige. Robert Downey, Jr. reprises his role as the title character, with Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, and Favreau reprising their roles as Pepper Potts, James Rhodes, and Happy Hogan, respectively. Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, and Ben Kingsley round out the film’s principal cast.
After the release of Iron Man 2 in May 2010, Favreau decided not to return as director, and in February 2011 Black was hired to rewrite and direct the film. Throughout April and May 2012, the film’s supporting cast was filled out, with Kingsley, Pearce, and Hall brought in to portray key roles. Filming began on May 23, 2012 in Wilmington, North Carolina. The film was shot primarily in North Carolina, with additional shooting in Florida, China and Los Angeles. The film’s visual effects were handled by a number of companies, including Scanline VFX, Digital Domain and Weta Digital.
Iron Man 3 was converted to 3D in post-production. The film premiered at the Grand Rex in Paris on April 14, 2013, and was internationally released on April 25, 2013 in IMAX and was released on May 3, 2013 in the United States.
The basic premise is as follows:
In a flashback, Tony Stark recalls a New Years Eve party in 1999 with scientist Maya Hansen, inventor of Extremis, an experimental regenerative treatment intended to allow its users to recover from crippling injuries. They are approached by crippled scientist Aldrich Killian, who offers them a place in his company Advanced Idea Mechanics, but Stark arrogantly rebuffs him.
In the present day during Christmas, some time after The Avengers, Stark’s experiences during that film are causing him great anxiety, and he has built several Iron Man suits, creating friction with his girlfriend Pepper Potts. Global tensions also run high in the wake a string of bombings by terrorist the Mandarin, which have left intelligence agencies bewildered by their lack of forensic evidence. When Stark Industries security chief Happy Hogan is caught in one such attack, Stark overcomes his stupor and issues a televised threat to the Mandarin, who responds by destroying Tony’s home with helicopter gunships. Pepper and Maya, who had come to warn Tony, survive the attack. Tony then finds himself in rural Tennessee after his artificial intelligence JARVIS follows a flight plan from Tony’s investigation into the Mandarin. Tony’s experimental armor lacks sufficient power to return to California, and the world believes him dead. Will Iron Man be able to save the day this time? Check it out in theaters now! =)

- Don’t turn on lights at all for as long as you can—open your curtains and enjoy natural light.
- Drive the speed limit, and combine all your errands for the week in one trip.
- Support your local economy and shop at your farmer’s market.
- Pay your bills online. Not only is it greener, it’s a sanity saver.

Studio Brow is here to not only give great customer care, but experience as well with each service we provide.
Are eyelash extensions something you’ve thought about?
In addition to eyebrow shaping services, such as waxing threading, we offer offers semi-permanent, synthetic lashes, coined Illumilash, to show off when going to the club, party or get together that can last up to two months with proper care and maintenance.
Studio Brow offers four degrees of Illumilash Eyelash Extensions; Natural, Lovely, Elegant and Gorgeous going on your individual style and fit.
We use a surgical grade, water-resistant adhesive to bond the extensions to your natural lashes, so you can shower, swim or exercise, worry-free.
Eyelash extensions will lengthen and thicken your lashes and also can eliminate the need for mascara.
Studio Brow’s services are performed by our own certified “Browstars” who have become licensed cosmetologists taught by experienced professionals to provide eyelash extensions.
Enhancements designed to add length, thickness and fullness to natural eyelashes, eyelash extensions may be compared to hair extensions for one’s eyelashes.
Some brief history of eyelash extensions: The Greek word for eyelash is “blepharis“. This word is often used as a root in biological terms. Kohl, a black powder (usually antimony sulfide or lead sulfide), has been worn as far back as the Bronze Age to protect and enhance lashes. In Ancient Egypt, it was used as well by the wealthy and the royal to protect their eyes from the sand, dust and bugs. Modern eye makeup includes mascara, eyeliner, eye putty and eye shadow to emphasize the eyes. The invention and use of eyelashes extensions began in 1916 when director D.W. Griffith was making his film, Intolerance. He wanted actress Seena Owen to have lashes “that brushed her cheeks, to make her eyes shine larger than life.” These first eyelash extensions were made of human hair woven through fine gauze by a local wig maker. They were then attached to Owen’s eyelashes.
Illumilash will enlighten your being by taking the beauty which is already there and bring out its shine and brighten your world.
A painless and relaxing procedure, you’ll be amazed with the results; they are virtually weightless and have an incomparable look and feel.
There is only one way to experience longer, thicker and beyond imaginable lashes and that is with ILLUMILASH!
Thanks for reading! Don’t forget to Like us on Facebook.com/Studiobrow. We’ll see you soon =)
